1955 Pontiac Chieftain

The name Catalina was first used on the 1950 Chieftain Series 25/27 hardtop, Pontiac's top of the line model at the time. Originally referred to as 'hard-top convertibles', these vehicles offered pillar-less design in the door and window areas, along with the top-grade convertible appointments. The advantage this fixed-roof design offered was its sporty, airy feeling without the expense and drawbacks normally associated with convertibles. With the exception of the 1958 Bonneville, all Pontiac hardtops were designated Catalina from 1950 to 1958. Powered by a flathead straight-8 engine at the time of its debut, it would receive Pontiac's new 287 CID OHV V8 four years later. A new one-piece windshield was new for 1954. The 1955 Pontiac Chieftain you see here is a fine example of Pontiac's top of the line hardtop model. Refinished in Bolero Red and Raven Black, the paint looks great, holding a beautiful shine with only minor imperfections. Just like any other car from the "good ol' years," this Chieftain has plenty of chrome all around. All the chrome is in excellent condition and shines bright. Both the front and rear bumper appear to be re-chromed but do show a few minor scuffs and scratches. Inside this beautiful Pontiac, you will see that the entire interior has been reupholstered in the same original fashion and original colors. The interior is upholstered in red vinyl and gray cloth, which is in excellent condition. The red carpet is also in great condition with only minor staining. The headliner has also been reupholstered with only minor sagging. Under the hood, the engine bay is clean. The engine appears to be repainted for esthetic purposes and looks great. This Chieftain is equipped with the 180 horsepower capable, 287ci V8, which was new in the '55 Pontiacs. Attached to the V8 is a Hydramatic automatic transmission. The chrome Pontiac wheels are wrapped in newer P215/75R15 tires that are free of dry rot and cracks. The current mileage on this Chieftain shows 68,500 and the VIN number is K755H16427.
