Concerned that the considerable price increase of a Type 911 with "flat" six-cylinder powerplant over the Type 356 would cost the company sales and narrow brand appeal, Porsche executives decided to introduce a new four-cylinder entry-level model. Like the 911 (original internal factory designation "901"), the four-cylinder 912 was originally known at Zuffenhausen by a number with a zero in the middle, but the "902" designation was never used publicly. As production of the 356 model concluded in 1965, on April 5, 1965 Porsche officially began production of the 912 coupe. Styling, performance, quality construction, reliability, and price made the 912 a very attractive buy to both new and old customers, and it substantially outsold the 911 during the first few years of production. Porsche produced nearly 30,000 912 coupe units and about 2500 912 Targa body style units (Porsche's patented variation of a cabriolet) during a five-year manufacturing run. Production of the Targa, complete with removable roof and heavy transparent plastic rear windows openable with a zipper (later called 'Version I' by Porsche and the 'soft-window Targa' by enthusiasts), commenced in December 1966 as a 1967 model. In January 1968, Porsche also made available a Targa 'Version II' option ('hard window Targa') with fixed glass rear window, transforming the Targa into a coupe with removable roof. This '68 Porsche 912 is one of those rare "soft window targa" cars that comes finished in its original colors of Metallic Blue with a Black Leatherette interior, the car has just had the carburetors rebuilt by well known Porsche specialist, Reid Vann, here in St. Louis. This was a nicely optioned car from the factory that included Bumper Horns, Ventilated Chrome Wheels, Antenna, Loud Speaker, Wood Steering Wheel, Tinted Glass All Around and Semperit Tires. This is said to be a 56,000 original mile car! The paint on the car is in very good overall condition and finished in the original color of Metallic Blue. There are a few minor imperfections to the body but overall very presentable. The targa goes on an off with no issues as does the vinyl, soft back window. Both front and rear bumpers are in very good condition with no notable damage. The body is solid on the car and very straight. Inside, the black leatherette interior looks great and is believed to be original for the car. The carpet, door panels, dash and targa headliner are all in very good, original condition. There is some minor cracking to the dash which is not uncommon for these cars. The original AM/FM stereo was been replaced back in the 80's. The fold down back seats look good with no wear. Under the rear deck lid, the four cylinder runs great and has recently been through a carb rebuild at Reid Vann, here in St. Louis. The engine number is 741878. Connected to the five speed manual transmission, the car drives out very well with plenty of power. In the trunk you will find the original ventilated chrome wheel spare and an Optima battery. The wheels are all in great condition and are wrapped with brand new BF Goodrich radial tires. There has been new floor pans installed which are solid and welded in. We do have the original Porsche Certificate of Authenticity for the car that shows the original numbers, colors and options. Current mileage shows 56,190 and is said to be original for the car. VIN number is 12870986 and the car is being sold on a clean title.
